Pros

Natalie haynes is an amazing linguist, classicist, and writer. Haynes shreds whatever claims to the title hero men like jason and theseus have (and you really have to agree with her, especially about theseus) haynes has a way of adding just the right ...  Read More

This book is a great companion to many of the feminist retellings that are coming out. It brings wit, perspective and a feminist perspective to stories long in need of re-telling.

The book is well-researched, but it is also immensely entertaining. This is the book i’ve been recommending recently. Thanks to harper perennial for a gifted advanced copy of this book.

I'm a huge fan of mythology and this book did not disappoint. There's something for everyone in these chapters- from original interpretations of greek to the dangers of sanitizing myths to tell them to children.

Cons

If you're expecting a historical fiction-esq. Retelling of the women of greek mythology, this is not the book for you.

In the past these women have suffered through mistranslations mistaken identity and plain lack of regard by male writers almost from the start of mythologizing down to the present day

It does real justice to the source material but it also provides a much needed feminine perspective on these women whove been toooften treated as props or afterthoughts

Some of my favorite chapters had to be the ones focused on medusa medea and the amazons although penelope and clytemnestra came close behind

Clytemnestra and medea win greeces awards for 34worst wife34 and 34worst mother34 because haynes points out greek men were terrified of powerful women

It kind of makes you want to travel back to when the plays were first performed and watch the male audience shake in their sandals especially over euripides medea
