It does stand on its on when on a hard flat surface when our fold the top part but it doesnt stay very well if its laying an uneven or soft surface

The main differences are this cases edges only rise to cover the corners whereas the apple cases edges go all the way around the ipad and the spine of this case is a lot more loose than the apple cases so when the front cover is open and resting at the back of the ipad it doesnt lie perfectly flush like the apple cases
