Pros
Stephen ambrose is or was a good historian. The reader learns about the big four men who were instrumental in bringing it to fruition. Nothing like it in the world is never boring.
Cons
The best book on the transcontinental railroad is called 'empire express' while many of ambrose's works have been entertaining and mostly accurate, this book is clearly subpar. It has his usual bombastic statements and pedestrian writing.
This book begins and ends with grand statements about the vision of government supremacists like abraham lincoln. The technique of imagining and fabricating details of events belongs in historical novels, not in a conscientious history. Also, he goes ... Read More

I thought however that one big omission was a fuller treatment of the native americans whose lands were so significantly impacted by the railroad the decimation of the bison being only one way in which their livelihoods were destroyed

Ambrose often talks about indian raids but not about indian culture and about the whole business from the point of view of the indians

Seeing old shows 3 times is not as interesting as learning new and true stories

That said this book can be a real slog at times because it seems like youre laying every spike arguing with every congressman for every dollar fighting every native american dynamiting every mountain and building every bridge
