I followed instructions posted on the community and installed the device handler first

I added this to my zwave network to be able to get notifications when someone rings the doorbell as well as some additional automation such as turning on the front porch light if its dark when the doorbell is rung

I just had to connect the wires from the sensor to the doorbell chime and hide the box inside the chime box

You do not need to add custom smart apps to get push notifications of the doorbell press as you see in many reviews of this thing and smartthings

Having it recognized by my smartthings hub was easy too but that is probably because i was careful not to even put batteries in it until i added the device handler code to my smartthings account
