The shelves are cleverly designed there is something like a fat rubber band that first goes onto the pole and you slide the shelf down the pole to the rubber band

When you put a shelf in place the shelf is slightly elevated in the front and the rubber caps press against the pole

Depending on the amount of weight you use you may have to adjust the tension of the rod hitting the ceiling so its very tight and the weight of the shelves dont pull down on it too hard as that may cause the unit to slip

I rated this minus one star because of the difficult assembly and the inability to buyadd another shelf or two which this unit could clearly support if you didnt overload the shelves
