Pros & Cons
Pros
The paper is high quality and very white - it has a nice feel and doesn't allow for bleed through when using a highlighter. It's a book that provokes and challenges you to think differently about chess. This book is borderline necessary for understand... Read More
My 21st century edition is a book about chess strategy. It outlines the role of pawn structure, the importance of prophylaxis, and the concept of overprotection. The book also discusses the various openings and defenses that he favored.
Cons
This review is not about the content, but the 'kindle' edition. This is not an ebook, it's a poor-quality scan of a hard copy edition. Please spare yourself being cheated and buy other publisher's versions.
Typography is poor with hard-to-read sans sarif fonts. Printing and paper quality are poor with blurry print and high bleed-through on low-grade high-pulp paper. Layouts are ugly. Poor font choice.

One of the challenges i have found with other chess books is that there are not enough diagrams and there are so many variations that seem to take the reader down rabbit holes that it is difficult to find your way back to the point of the lesson

Other chess books assume that these concepts are understood prior to reading their books
Posted by a reviewer on Amazon
Most likely other authors learned these fundamental concepts from this book and therefore assume everyones learning has followed a similar path which is why they never explain the concepts in depth
Posted by a reviewer on Amazon
Adult readers will fare better understanding the explanations than young readers because the expressions used in some paragraphs reflect the writing style of a century ago

Added to this there are a few typographical errors so it can be difficult to discern a typo from an uncommon expression or failure to understand the point being explained
