Pros & Cons

Pros

This book is perfect to test your very young child's readiness to play. Some good recorders are from yamaha, suzuki, and zen on. Nice book to accompany a new recorder.

It's incredibly easy and doesn't go over the full range of notes, sharps, flats, naturals and playing in different scales. The instruction here is on point for new learners. It is simplified by working on one note at a time.

Cons

This book obviously wasn't written by a music teacher or by any other kind of teacher. It's also not very good for a younger child because it doesn't contain more than one song. The songs lack real melody, and there are not enough songs.

The back of the book says this book is for absolute beginners. Even adult beginner books have more explanation and exercises. I guess the exercises are okay as long as i teach her the material first and then just practice with the exercises.

It introduces the lowest note c by explaining written as middle c on the piano but sounding 1 octave up. This notation was never introduced. At least it says to use 1 amp; 2 amp; 3 amp; 4 &.

I suggest you get a recorder and learn along with your child be a visual example to them and introduce small scale excercises with the notes they learn as they learn them learn how to properly clean our their recorders how to tell when terrible sounds they emit is a result of condensation build up loose fingers or over blowing the note

I am personally a fan of the alfred books and use them for several instruments but hal lenard books are just as great

Its cheap comes with the cleaning stick we use baby wash cloths for the swab a bag and a fingering chart and most importantly you can look into the bottom and you can visually see if there is condescenation build up and where it is

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The solid mold ones are more difficult to reach in to clean and you will likely be doing more full cleaning in the beginning while your child breaks the instrument in and is learning breath control
