Pros
The book spans several decades and had my attention from the first page. It makes the reader reevaluate beliefs. It's a fictional memoir but it's surely based on the author's remembrances of his family.
The book is a memoir masterpiece. Strewn into a biographical construct of his grandfather's life, it's quite effective. A terrific novel of memory, discovery and 20th century history disguised as an old dying grandpa's musings.
This book has a permanent spot in my library which i try to keep whittled down to two bookcases so books don't take over my house. Second, to structure the book in a clever and intricate spiral of reminiscences. A good book does that, though.
Cons
It jumps around in time zones and characters much too much. Took me quite a while to finish it.
The author seems focused on using 50-cent words to describe the life of a grandfather whose life was apparently quite interesting, but made boring by chabon. He should have pared down the story and left out about 9/10 of the description and rumination... Read More

The narrator doesnt read the footnotes and the footnotes are important to the story

I couldnt help myself from grabbing a pen every now and then and marking a particularly beautiful passage of which there are many in this book
