This is a rich wealth of examples to either scrutinize or simply to enjoy. The writing is spare yet full of character. It derives its charm from its quirky characters.

His characters are very real while occasionally being almost uncanny with their idiosyncrasies. His characters make twisted observations while questioning their life choices.

Kino’ is my favorite in this collection. Like noah going on the ark, it begins to rain torrentially while kino is cooped up in a cheap hotel.

Cons

This is murakami in miniature, and well, i’m not sure it works. It seems rather boring and directionless, which might be on purpose to imply that life without a woman is the same. There was nothing profound in there for me to miss.
