Pros & Cons

Pros

If you like savory, meaty flavors and want something non-sugary sweet on your breakfast toast, marmite is fantastic. The closest i can describe the flavor is on the order of soy sauce, beef bouillion or mushroom pate. Super salty and funky.

Marmite was originally called parwill - a pun which will be appreciated by aussies and brits. Dark glass jars keep spices fragrant longer. The jar has a freshness date well into the future.

Not everyone reacts to it the same way. That probably tells you my upbringing.

Cons

Despite being labeled south african, was clearly made in england, and therefore not usable. What was shipped did not meet those requirements, and was unusable. It's too bad mr somma has little appreciation for marmite.

Quality

Used with a light hand it is a savory delight working equally well in soups or on bread and toast

Lately ive been being croissants made with real butter toasting them buttering them and adding on the precious marmite

This gets spread very thin and at the rate that im consuming it alone because nobody in my household will even get close to it...  Read More

To uninitiated the taste of either spread applied so lavishly is going to be overwhelming

Price

This stuff is pricy and a bit messy and worth it all

Always too expensive but makes for a good treat

If i could complain about anything it would be the price for a small jar but eh its not all that unexpected for an imported food item

Shipping

Got it in the mail two days ago and i’m so glad i tried it

Takes a long time to arrive from england to america but worth the wait

I finally decided to buy some online and tasted it the day it arrived i was right

Packaging/appearance

The jar i received was exactly as described its the correct size and has a freshness date well into the future

I topped them with sour cream and added thyme and they were delicious

But note to amazon package this better my last glass jar arrived smashed to pieces in a bubble wrap envelope

The jar looks very british with the nofrills label and the vintage yellow cap

Competitiveness

It is pretty accurate to compare it to soy sauce as well

Now the aussies have vegemite and the brits have marmiteeach says his is superior

Marmite is more syrupy and salty than vegemite vegemite is more solid and less salty but still quite salty than marmite

Its very very similar to better than bouillon vegetarianvegetable base if youve ever tasted a tiny amount

Ive wanted to try marmite for years but being american ive never come across any in my local stores

What was unexpected was that it tastes a little like bouillon and that its thicker than i thought it would be thicker than molasses as in the part i scooped out of the jar with a butter knife has held its shape whereas in a jar of molasses it would settle level with gravity soon

I mixed 1tbspn marmite with 1tbspn butter and 1 tbspn marsala cooking wine cooked it in a small pot till it mixed then tossed it over the potatoes peeled and diced and baked for an hour or so tossing it every 20 minutes to keep the mixture evenly coated
