I think you have to submerge it in the water before turning it on i would also no recommend trying to avoid sucking up the sand as it goes in the motor and sounds a bit dodgy

I attach a small section of garden hose to the outlet elbow using the little rubber boot supplied turn it on for a couple of seconds until ive got a flow into the bucket and turn it off

I did this but lost some of the grip between the pipe and sucking head so had to tape the two bits together

Not quite 5 stars as i did find that as the collection bag fills up it occasionally pops off and rereleases its contents back into the tank as it is only held on by elastic

Was too big for my acquarium also suction bad and bag fell apart when washing

I use it to pick up the poop from the bottom just make sure it is properly submerged other wise you will not get any suction
