Pros & Cons

Pros

This is apart of a series so maisie's story gets to continue on. Apart from that, the novel is near-perfect.

The great war (for me) is often difficult to read about. Through the graphic portrayal of the facial and * injuries of the young english boys fighting on the frontlines, the reader fully appreciates the horrors of war. The pre-wwi, and later wwii eras...  Read More

The mysteries are quiet, yet imbued with such intensity and suspense. The series combines a kind of psychoanalysis of both characters and circumstances. Main character is an intuitive woman detective back in the early 1900's.

Cons

Maisie dobbs is not a good detective. The characters are shallow. The heroine refuses to agree to marry her true love because she sees tragedy in the future.

The plot is vaguely a rip off of vera brittain's testament of youth (a phenomenal book) anyone in mortal danger who isn't afraid is insane.

Many characters were left undeveloped. The huge flashback taking up the middle of the book was a mistake.

You really feel that miss fisher is a flapper in the 'twenties.

So i’m going to skip all of those earlier books and perhaps try number eighteen when it comes out

Maybe that one will be less dark and sad

I think for me this book might have suffered from having the writing be too good

The narrator rita barrington did a nice enough job but it didn’t come out as a smooth steady flow of words as you’d picture a conversation

As far as a distinct voice for each character goes – they all sounded like iterations of the narrators natural voice

The mystery in this book has to do with deaths at a ‘farm’ where returning soldiers with terrible facial disfigurement go to live so they can avoid the stares among the public

This book broke my heart and made me very sad
