If you want to use the smooth size from this small pad just turn it inside out so the elastic band is on the rougher side you only have to rinse the back scrubber or the little pad thoroughly so there is no soap left in it and then you have to let it air dry the instructions on the box do say that you have to sanitize it occasionally although it does not give any directions on how to do that
