He was having a hard time with the long laces on his shoes and adjusting them while he was playing goalie.
Just make sure you're happy with the length before you clip it because that bad boy is not going to open easily again.

Take your time lining up the laces correctly and they won't fail you.

If you tug too much on the strings where they go into the clamp, eventually they will come out.
