Pros & Cons
Pros
Quantum mechanics describes the probabilities of finding a particle at specified locations. For anyone that desires biological applications of qm -- this is it.
The photosynthesis of plants is based not only on sunlight but also on quantum entanglement. Quantum phenomena are essential to the workings of enzymes, respiration (the respiratory chains) and photo synthesis.
There's no way it can't be reductionist without getting into the mathematical formulas of how it all works. Quantum physics is complicated enough that it dazzled einstein.
Overall they convey the excitement of revolutionary advances in biology in a non-technical manner, illuminated by many well-told human stories of mystery and discovery. I like the extra life background they give about the scientists and how they made ... Read More
This is an excellent book that imo does a very good job of presenting an understanding of concepts that are counter intuitive (but proven) and extremely complex. Unlike most such writings we are not burdened with the math, that really helps. However, ... Read More
Cons
This book dumbs down everything that might be meaningful. It leads me to believe this book is aimed at the non-scientist reader. Where's the entire field of quantum chemistry? They also credit feynman for nanotechnology, but this was a simple aside.
Highlights
Quality
Eye opening thought provoking and very enjoyable
And unlike most such writings we are not burdened with the math that really helps
It needs a comfort level with the concepts to be able to describe them
Competitiveness
Plenty of good examples tying biology to the quantum world
In particular i like the authors use of metaphors to help describe how things work in the quantum world
Mistakes in programming would explain anomalies in our world
