The inside is sufficiently padded. Maybe these have just the right amount of cushion and rigidity. These seem to provide not only cushion but support.
Cons

I would go to all of the local chain hardware stores and each time buy a different make after one after another brand would never stay in place on my knees

I finally decided only an articulated knee pad would work and tried these
