The magnet holds my iphone six plus very strongly even though i have a thin slim case on it though i imagine if you had a thick case like an otter box you would have to put the metal plate on the outside of the case because the thickness of the case would interfere with the grip but that would be true for any magnetic holder

I didnt want to move the magnet to the outside so i bought a thirdparty extra metal plate and stacked two together in the case

Update only problem is that when weather gets hot the rubber mounting cup will melt onto your dash and not work effectively

In addition to a strong suction cup this unit has surprisingly sticky adhesive on the suction cup

Make sure you knew exactly where youre going to place it before removing the plastic off of the adhesive

Bought a different brand and style not as secure a hold as this one

Be sure you have it where you want it the first time though as it doesnt stick well if you reposition it
