Octavia butler’s kindred is a life-changing read. Set in both 1976 & the early 1800s, kindred joins the present and the past as our protagonist tries to understand what keeps drawing her into the past.

The descriptions of the slaves' punishments are difficult and soul-searing. People today “know” people were enslaved but this book showed how a person of today would have to adjust to live to survive.

Instead of being educated about the sins of our country’s past and moving forward to correct the disgusting behaviors and ensuring it never happens again people are clawing and fighting tooth and nail to hide the depravity done to so many oppressed people

Juxtaposing that with how people today want to remain ignorant to this history and want to close their eyes and don’t want to acknowledge the atrocities is extremely upsetting

In order to heal and move forward there must be acknowledgment but it seems we are in a constant battle fighting against people wanting to keep the people of this country ignorant to its past

And to justify this bigotry through religion or just wanting to stick your head in the sand is cruel and shameful

The book disturbed me when it first came out

I imagine this book is most likely banned now in the state of florida where i reside

I was extremely upset when i finished it
