Pros & Cons
Pros
Radio runs on either rechargeable or disposable batteries. Pop the batteries in or use the crank. Perfect for emergency situations, or just to take camping or hiking.
Built in antenna pulls in the sports and talk radio, the fm and short wave work nice too with the extension antenna. Noaa alert setting works good too. The tuner is a little rough, but what isn't these days?
Cons
Amazon and/or the third party seller have closed the return window and product support window, so we have no recourse. Left it unopened in the box without testing. Not very useful.
The battery indicator is very poor. The manual says it takes between 3 and 4 hours to recharge the battery using a usb charger. The solar panel is too small and evidentially stopped charging.
My little cheapie emergency radio by leaton** has better sound clarity and gets much better reception than this larger box. This radio has some nice features but is not very intuitive. The $2 thrift store radio at work is better than this.
This radio is made of hard plastic and could not take the rough and tumble of any kind of trip. Short wave is terrible also. No reception on any channel. You can only get about 4-5 across the entire band on this radio. You cannot get sw or fm.
Highlights
Quality
Sound quality is what you would expect from a portable radio but for listening to news talk or weather reports it certainly fits the bill
Ive only had it a few days but i am impressed with the quality
Step it up in your build quality and you would have a much better product especially if you put rubber bumpers around it to protect it
So far the shortwave sw1 and sw2 hasnt attracted my interest due to the low number of stations received and quality of the pickup
Price
For the price you cant go wrong
For the price you can buy several
Shipping
The kaito store provided excellent customer service and shipping was prompt
Competitiveness
Overall i highly recommend the kaito ka500 radio to anyone looking for a reliable versatile and highquality emergency radio
