The metal end is able 1cm in length so it covers up pretty much the whole first cm. I misplace my tape measure all the time, so it's great having back-ups. Nice measuring tapes.

Cons

That means that something that you measure to be 48 inches long is actually only 47. Thats not very good accuracy.
