Pros & Cons
Pros
The novel is at its best when it indulges in a memoir-like feel and the insider lingo that comes from the behind-the-scenes setting of the coney island-like joyland.
Joyland" is an underrated gem.
Cons
It is a very small book, looks cheaply published. Its lurid cover not withstanding, this book is about as much like the mystery paperback novellas of the past as an episode of sesame street is.
Nothing that exciting happens. Nothing really happens. And there was no reason to put in in there.
There is more sleeping-on-the-beach and could've-should've-would've melancholy than there is meaningful plot development or consequential happenings. It gets tiring, along with the pervasive view that christians are wacky, fanatical, hateful people.

This is so much like the things that king wrote long ago that i have to wonder if its something that he pulled out of the trunk and dusted off
