The way that mbp cools down is something of a two part method

One is that it uses the aluminum body as a heatsinkthis is why you should only really use it on a flat and hard surface the second part is that it pulls air through the space between the keys and pushes it out the crack under the screen at the back of the computer

They keyboard cover basically prevents air from following this path causing a very hot computer
