You hit the yellow button on it to turn it on

When powered on it will flash red every couple seconds when it detects power it will rapidly flash and make a beeping noise

My old one was more expensive than this bought it at a big name hardware store and it broke in less than a year

Ideally these testers should be able to identify which side of a wire is hot and which is neutral but this tester just goes off when it gets close to the wire

Remember ever 3 min it will turn itself off so this not a bad idea just takes getting used to
