The pole is telescopic so slides in and out to the desired length but once you get it to length just extend it an extra inch and twist to tighten

The extra inch is so you can compress it like a spring to get a snug fit between top facing walls

Ive just painted the bathroom and am replacing it due to the rust patches however the replacement will be with another of the same as i thought it was very good
