Nathanial philbrick's descriptions of the crew's desperation are both harrowing and captivating. He also delves into the psychological and emotional toll that the events of the essex had on its survivors and their families.

Everyone was forced to fend for themselves and many resorted to cannibalism. Unfortunately they didn't realizes that they were being hunted.
