The same brown stains were noted on the inside of the lid as well and thought that perhaps the liquid inside had leaked from possibly not screwing on the top very well

Upon further investigation it turns out that the plating was coming off and the brown stain was actually rust see attached photos

Nice water bottle however the plastic mouth piece to sip the water gets dirty easily and not easy to clean
