The center opening allows for easy access to the water without drenching all their hair that then drips wherever they wander to. For reference - dog is an irish setter/poodle mix.
This makes her work for the water and she gets it in increments. Not having water spit up on my lap on a daily basis is a big win. Safer than a regular bowl.
Like to the point sections of my hardwood floors were literally rotting out and had to be replaced. One thing bothers me is flooding part that not glued permanently.
This concave lid is what the dogs drink from, with the reservoir of water below protected from splashing. There is footprint in the disk that always little water to come through so dogs cannot gulp.

Also when you are cleaning be careful as soapy water would get inside the filter and it’s hard to get it back out soi ended up throwing out the floating piece because of this

But when i went to wash it at my kitchen sink i set it aside to dry and noticed water got into the floating dish part and i’m not sure how to drain it out

She’s teeny weenie so her little wind pipes can’t handle that aggression and she used to cough for like 5 min after drinking water
