On the first startup the machine goes through the usual windows 10 initialisation which is likely to take up to 30 mins or more to get the machine just as you like it

Personally i chose not to install hps recommended mcafee security products but stick with windows own so there was a bit of uninstalling restarting and activating to do

Once the initial setup was complete i set the machine to install ms office 365 apps and google chrome and that was it everything else was ready to go in about half an hour from first boot

The screen is bright and contrasty and i would have no qualms doing photoshop work on it

While the machine can certainly handle video editing it does run hot and this means fan noise see edit below

The only thing i feel the surface laptop is missing is the 360 hinge because even though my uses are met with the normal laptop form most of the time in order to use a stylus for notes or photoshop work it would be useful to fold the keyboard out of the way or lay the machine completely flat

However if you plan to use a machine in only laptop mode i would say that the ms surface laptop is a better experience smoother no fan noise lighter and slightly larger and higher resolution screen

The ms surface laptop i58gb ram256gb hdd is often to be found reduced to about £750 which is ballpark hp envy rrp and for my money the ms pips it
