Pros

Good insight into classical philosophy without too much simplification while avoiding entanglements in obtuse issues. Do yourself the courtesy of reading this insightful and engaging book. My sincere thanks and gratitude to the author for writing it.

William irvine lays out the foundation of the stoic philosophy in his 2009 book a guide to the good the ancient art of stoic joy. This is a great introduction to stoicism for those who may have had little exposure to the ideas and writings of many of ...  Read More

How to be a stoic is a great introduction to the philosophy and practice of stoicism. Stoicism is not the stodgy, stiff upper lip, coldly rational spock-like demeanor that many today believe.

Cons

Appears to be limited introduction to stoicism (mainly referencing epictetus) and partially pointless reminiscence of travel plans.

The author also inserts his political opinions (which seem to be leftist and anti-capitalist) at several points. Not well written imho.

It is folly to pretend that animals only do bad, angry, thoughtless things. Animals are altruistic. We are the only species that commits genocide.

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Ive already purchased another book from the author a handbook for new stoics and have purchased meditations by marcus aurelius and the enchiridion which were two books he mentioned in this one

This introduction covers all the bases in a balanced and thorough manner but also while remaining easiertoread than some more academic or scholarlyoriented stoic introductory texts

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Not that the author is not academic or scholarly just that he is an engaging easytoread writer choosing to write to a wider audience for the most practical benefit

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Otherwise i find the book to be an excellent introduction into stoicism

But consistently throughout the book the author pretends to converse with a person who died 2k years ago
