If you are only looking to put up a monitor and are not worried about sound then this device may suffice

And if you are using the hdmi on the computer and vga on the monitor that also means that since the source is the hdmi your computer will think that it is sending sound through thereby muting it from your actual computer

This adapter worked great with an actual computer monitor but i am sad to say it failed to output to my tv

It has always done well with vga signals even when running at the unpleasant 720p resolution

When plugged into the computer the display did start to adjust itself to a lower resolution but there was nothing on the tv screen

I then went and tried the adapter with the lcd monitor in my media closet and thankfully it worked fine
