Pros

Strong on historical insight, geography and maps. King begins by discussing the work involved in creating these maps. Incredible history is the backbone of this reference. A wonderfully illustrated geographical guide to the complete series.

Dean king's harbors and high seas serves as a companion to patrick o'brian's aubrey-maturin series. The book is a most valuable companion to to the patrick obrien aubrey/matur in series.

As addictive as these books are, they become even more addictive with the companion. King's book really solves the second problem and in doing so, extends the books in a way another novelist could not.

Dean king does a wonderful tightrope walk of giving you the backstory without giving away key parts of the plot. John b. Hattendorf is another contributor.

    The rest of the information in the book is interesting for any fan of literature from the great age of sail indeed even historians but as information about the specific characters of obriens nautical novels it is a failure
