Clean dry and smooth is alway the best surface and then after you applied and mount make sure you hold it in place with some pressure for 1 minute and try to let both sides alone for 24 hours if possible to let the adhesive cure fully to the place to stuck it on

After that i double checked where the other half would connect with the actual door
