All that really does is relieve the tension on the battery so it wont make contact with the lantern same as disconnect battery
For long term storage in case of emergency probably not for the reason stated above with the power drain for led

My only criticism is the plastic bubble warp packaging is virtually impossible to open

The problem is that the next person who uses it wont know if the battery is dead or if the unit is dead because the power button on top wont turn the unit on anymore

Get you act together and make a switch that turns off the led notification light while still leaving the lantern fully operational

Though if you tape a note onto the lantern reminding the next person to turn tighten the battery knob first before you hit the power switch that might work
