My computer crashed and my older gtechnology drive didnt have the latest usbc cableable support so i wanted an updated gdrive for the new computer

I was able with the help of an adapter cable to connect my older gdrive to my new computer to retrieve the archival data i had on it from my older computer

The only way to tell if it is doing a backup is to look at the very small time machine icon on the menu bar
