Pros
Sennheiser hd 660s headphones. Easy to switch between headphone and speaker without unplugging. Volume knob is very robust and has good feedback.
Fostex headphone amplifier and dac is built of a very high quality. Volts from the usb is more than ample to run the dac and power its headphone jack. The dac and headphone jack has great low bass.
The sound stage is wide and deep. Tonality very natural. Not a whimper of a problem.

Packaging/appearance
Researching several dacs within my 350 price point i kept coming back to the fostex hpa3
Searched the internet read reviews and always came back to the fostex hpa3 because it fit my needs perfectly and my pocketbook
It is strictly a plug and play device right out of the box
The tonal balance is quite similar to the dacport hd except that the fostex has a wider and deeper sound stage

I replaced a small fiio dac that i had hooked up to a little analog mixer so i could hear multiple sources at once
The fostex tonality nips at the heels of the bryston bda1 dac a 2000 gadget for sound quality
It was only required to change my default setting from sound card to fostex and select the bitsample rates

But i got tired of all the cables and the mixer added some noise to the output

Now i just use the phonerca selector to choose speakers or cans and removed everything else from the signal chain

At very high volumes i could detect 60 cycle hum with a bit of static that would come and go like a bad connection
