You can put the flat side down if you want it stable or the curved side down if you like a rocking motion

I am very happy with this because i usually am barefoot at home and this foot rest is comfortable on the soles of my feet versus hard plastic

I dont know that i would order one for work since i think wearing shoes while wearing it could break down the material quickly and make it very dirty
