Pros & Cons

Pros

The cycler uses a cast iron bucket to scrap food scraps from the bottom of a compost bin.

Food cycler platinum is the ideal compromise between discarding food waste and maintaining a traditional compost pile. Living in the northeast us it lets me compost year round. It significantly reduces our trash, really helps with the trash smell.

Processing takes from 3 to 5 hours depending on how moist the contents are. These are hardly substantive complaints, as the operation and results are first rate. It does what it is promoted to do.

Cons

After a few weeks of emailing back and forth trouble shooting my problem, the unit breaking after a year is not worth the money i spent. I have enough of that mind numbing stuff to do at work. No replacement parts or warranty.

Food cycler grinds and dries food waste but does not make compost. One is better off buying a composting bucket/device that can be placed outside and do composting that way.

The unit is supposed to run unsupervised, i can't be expected to watch it for 6 hours. In one test i let it run for a full 24 hours and it didn't proceed from the grinding phase. Every other part of it works, just not the motor that's behind the grind...  Read More

Quality

Excellent product no significant wear and tear to the components yet

This machine works very well to dehydrate and grind up my kitchen scraps

Our filters stopped working after 3 months and the machine got stinky fast so be sure to have replacement filters on standby

A few hours later i was able to dislodge this rock hard substance that was stuck under the permanent post at the bottom of the barrel

Price

And this has already paid itself off

The price point is up there but this thing delivers

The price seems high but for me composting is a small part of saving the world and its a small price to buy to be able to contr...  Read More

Competitiveness

I live in a city and needed a better option than my outdoor compost bin to avoid large critters

It reminds you not to send loads of bread throughor really soupy stuff but if i ignore that and send lots of moldy rolls it does tend to stick the grinder or if i send really wet things that have pooled a bit of liquid in the bottom of my compost bin and over fill the food cycler bucket then sometimes it wont dry fully and ill need to run it a second time

It can be stinky when i run it but honestly i dont really change the filters we just run it overnight it takes 812 hours and that just depends on what im running

For the most part what does stick can be easily removed by letting it soak

My issue is that the nonstick coating is painted on and easily comes off when washed using a sponge made for nonstick coating

As for the scent i gave that 3stars because of the replacement filters
