The story takes us back to the vietnam era, during the fall of siagon. The story is set in the 1970s during the us withdrawal from viet nam. This all takes place in se asia in the days of the fall of saigon.

I have only a couple of issues with the book
Really enjoyed how he took the reader from florida to california to viet nam with the motherson relationship behind the scenes
I think he could have developed a trilogy or more with the characters and situation
Price
Wasnt aware that hillerman wrote other story lines

This is a far cry from the native american cultures he has become famous for writing about but demonstrates the same respect for simple cultures and the values that these hold

A little investigation revealed that moons late brother fathered a child before he passed away in a helicopter crash on the vietnam cambodia border their mother was going to pick up the child and bring her to america and that the baby also never made it to the rendezvous in manila

Some of the transition between scenes felt sloppy and i had the feeling that a lot of the material that helped to clear up who moon mathias believed he was as a man and who his brother mother and those who encountered him believed him to be was eliminated by the abridgement editor
