The first third of the book does starts fairly slow and i felt the whole escape from alaska thing didnt really do anything for the main storyline except to firmly express the authors poor opinion of the federal government

Individualism is again a characteristic of the human protagonists and the us government and bureaucracy is definitely not portrayed in a positive light but not with as heavy hand ad the april series
