Pros & Cons

Pros

A relatively inexpensive light meter. It has a tethered cap, a tripod socket on the back, and a double-secured battery door.

Works great, sensitive, durable and very affordable. Seems to be well made and durable. This meter has a great reputation and delivers good service.

The readings are shown on the lcd display in a large font. The cosine and color corrected sensor is an improvement. It is extremely accurate, as i periodically test it against another digital meter and a manual needle meter used in photography.

The lt505 is a good, accurate, general-purpose meter. The data logging is good for unattended recording.

It has its own carrying case with a belt loop that is stitched in place so doesn't come off. Includes batteries, and has the ability to recall low, high, and average readings.

Cons

Be careful when using the back-light button and load button. Unfortunately, the quality is suspect on this equipment.

Competitiveness

I compared this unit for stability under indoor lighting next to my international light photometer

I like that extech is owned by flir the company that makes infrared viewing instruments

The extech drifted significantly more than the other meter

But i have one such unit and everytime i compare the readings of both machines they are deadon with each other

My only problem is that the switches are not recessed so the unit got jostled in my backpack and went into a mode where the data resolution became inadequate for my needs however i bought a switch cover to fix that issue

Its a bit bulky and i wish theyd figure out a way to incorporate the sensor into the unit so youre not always having to use both hands to use the device the sensor is always flopping around while im using the device and juggling a notebook and so on

This is not designed to be rugged the case seems durable but isnt going to handle being bounced around often this is fine for me but others using these in a more demanding environment might care

Ive had good luck in measuring light for plants how much light i need in my workspace
