Apparently it had not drained completely even though i opened all the lines to empty them and removed the drain screw at the bottom of the unit

Obviously some water was retained in the heater with the resulting splits in the tubes within the unit

Perhaps the unit was not perfectly plumb on the wall and some water did not escape prior to our cold winter temperatures
