Pros
Easy to read, but doesn't make it dumb. Good reading for a snowy night. Very enjoyable read. Higher praise than maybe it sounds.
Earthrise is technical without being pedantic.
Cons
Not only are the battle scenes contrived, the author shows absolutely no concept of reality in the world of biology and evolution. To start with the scum are supposed to inhabit a barren planet with no vegetation at all. Perhaps they consume rocks.
