If you receive a unit that has a volume drop or distorted output you may want to open it up and tweak a trim pot as shown on the left in this picture

Either too high or too low and the sound can be distorted andor muffled

The trim pot on the right seems to work with the range control i set mine so that when in filter mode and the range control is centered it sounds good playing songs in g
