Pros

In spite of this, this book is a must read if you are interested in the interface between primitive and modern in today's world. Not overly technical, but engaging, and interesting.

The piraha are both fatalistic and innocent, perfectly adapted to their home in the amazon. This book describes the time spent among an isolated amazonian tribe by a * and linguist.

Quality

Although quite academic in spots gives a excellent understanding of this tribe and food for thought in our own lives

My own churchs method is somewhere in the middle we built churches in major cities and towns and invite people to come and to learn

Their worldview rejects all innovations even if taught how to make a canoe they wont do it since piraha dont make canoes

It is a culture that cannot expand and cannot thrive because its values cant survive expansion

Price

I found his reasons uncompelling and the logical fallacies in his thinking were all the more sad because of what it cost him

Shipping

I did not receive it due to not being able to keep up with the postal service and the tech tics so i hope the book is a 5 star rate

Book was delivered on time and as described

Competitiveness

In otherwords everett has made an apples to oranges comparision modern society is designed to surive as large groups

Too many people along with everett believe that we are no more nor less than evolved primates

Not overly technical but engaging and interesting

Although the movie was lagrely a disappointment to me the most interesting part of the movie were the interviews and comments by daniel everett who talked about his own experiences working as a missionary and linguist to a primitive amazonian tribe called the piraha whose language had never been learned by outsiders before

This book describes the time spent among an isolated amazonian tribe by a missionary and linguist but it is about much much more

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

The author was sent to learn the language of the piraha a tribe that now numbers less than a thousand people so that he could translate the new testament into that language to help convert the pirahas

But there is much more to the book than adventure in the amazon and discussion of an amazonian people

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

In the book he discusses the ways in which the language came to affect his views about language to the point where they made him question noam chomskys theory that grammar is innate

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

Essentially the author regards language as much more a product of culture or an interaction with culture than a matter of genetics a revolutionary view

Posted by a reviewer on Amazon

All in all this book made me think really hard about very big themes despite the fact that it is a relatively easy read
