They prevent evaporation and maybe warm the temp a degree or two.

This cover feels much stronger than the intex cover i bought last year. It's easier to roll and unroll and lightweight one. The weight makes it easy to maneuver the cover.

Don’t waste your money. Came apart in one year. Would be lucky to get one season out of it. I need something that is 12 mil+ at least.
