Ticonderoga #2 has a hard lead (or graphite) and sharpen in regular handheld sharpeners. The pencils sharpens well, the graphite is solid within the pencil yet soft enough to make writing easy.

Except for the chunky ones (triangle like these but bigger), these are the next best pencils for little ones. Love these triangular pencils. The tri and the black ones.
Easy to grip, and fits hand great. They are easy to grip correctly.
Our oldest grandchild is a first grader and has very good penmanship. Phnonemal design to assure proper hold for beginner writers. Perfect for early writers.

Too small for my grandchildren to hold as their fine motor skills are not advanced enough yet. Since they are for grandsons it * me off!
