    Both familiar and strange, the author synthesizes a number of different cultures but it's impossible to name just one place or time as her source and that lends mystery and exoticism to the narrative.

    Like any good allegory, today's issues are on display but in a clever disguise -- we get a heroine whose aspirations are challenged by her sex and her desert origins as well as her mother's mysterious yet similar past.
