The goodtime 2 weighs 6 pounds. The resonator actually makes the sound softer rather than louder. It is quite loud enough for group jamming.
The deering banjo is a very good quality instrument. It's my first banjo, but i do have lots of other stringed instruments; so i know the basics to look for in any stringed/fretted instrument.

This is a relatively inexpensive banjo, but don't think that means it is cheaply made. The quality for the price is unbeatable. Little additional setup required.

You could get a really cheap japanese banjo to start but they wont sound like anything youd really want to play
