You should be able to tell by having someone hold one while you pull down and release obviously you have to pull it past the hold point or it will not move

When i first installed them i got 3 only one of them recoiled like it should

There were zero instructions on how to adjust the tension or the stop point that i could find maybe they were in there somewhere

The retraction mechanism could be a little stronger one especially goes very slow
