They don’t retract all the way to 42 inches each bar comes in two pieces so to get shorter lengths you can only use half the bar

To use the bigger bar for a smaller curtain you have to screw the stopper through a rubber piece on the end because there are no threaded holes on that side

Down fall is that you have to screw a plate for the third rod one closest to the front away from the window covering the other two rods

Putting the rods together correctly is a bit confusing if you do not need the extender rod

All of the 1 or 2 stars ratings probably threw the foam inserts away and thats the reason the rods are moving

I thought the inner rods were weak and narrow but as long as you are not using really heavy drapes they should be okay for most users
